How We Study a Race Before Placing a Bet

Every selection we share starts with the same routine. Here is a look at how The Furlong Fellas study a race before deciding whether there is a bet worth making at all.

Start with the race, not the horse

Before looking at any individual runner, we look at the shape of the race itself: the trip, the ground, the size of the field and how the pace is likely to unfold. A strong horse in the wrong race conditions can easily be beaten, while a less obvious runner can come into its own when everything suits.

Once we understand the race, we work through the field one runner at a time. We compare each horse’s recent efforts with what the race is likely to demand, and we ask whether the market has already priced in the obvious. If it has, there is usually nothing to gain by joining the crowd.

Three things we check every time

  • Recent form: not just finishing positions, but how each run was achieved and against what.
  • Going preferences: some horses need a sound surface, others only come alive in the mud.
  • Market value: is the price bigger than the horse’s real chance? If not, we’re happy to leave it.

Some days there simply isn’t a bet that meets our criteria, and we’re comfortable with that.

Sensible staking

Every selection comes with a clear points plan, so results can be tracked honestly over time. We keep stakes small and consistent rather than chasing losses or piling on after a winner, because a sensible plan matters as much as finding the right horse.
